About

Dead Cells is a roguelike metroidvania action-platformer developed by Motion Twin. Players control a mass of cells inhabiting a corpse in a constantly changing castle, fighting through procedurally generated levels with tight 2D combat. The game combines permadeath roguelike elements with persistent metroidvania-style unlocks that open new paths and areas. Dozens of weapons and abilities offer diverse build options each run, from broadswords to freeze blasts. Boss encounters are challenging and memorable. Between runs, players spend cells to permanently unlock new weapons, mutations, and traversal abilities. Dead Cells received critical acclaim for its responsive combat, art direction, and addictive gameplay loop. Multiple free and paid DLC expansions have added substantial content since launch.

Dead Cells perfected the roguelike-metroidvania hybrid with combat that feels phenomenal in the hand. Every weapon swing, dodge roll, and ability has a weight and responsiveness that makes the moment-to-moment gameplay deeply satisfying. The procedural generation is smartly constrained — levels feel hand-crafted while maintaining genuine variety between runs. The permanent unlock system strikes an excellent balance, providing meaningful progression without undermining the roguelike tension. Build diversity is impressive, with dozens of viable weapon and ability combinations encouraging experimentation. The art direction gives the decaying castle a distinctive personality, and the environmental storytelling rewards exploration. Post-launch DLC support has been exceptional, adding substantial content and entirely new biomes for free. The difficulty scaling across boss cells provides a long tail of challenge for skilled players. Where it falls slightly short of perfection is in some weapon balance issues and the occasional run that feels doomed by early item drops. But as an action roguelike, few games match its precision and replayability.
